Teresa Lawrence, Baraboo Middle School: 7th Grade Language Arts

My original problem was for students to find a reflection of themselves in someone else.  I used this activity to introduce the BIG 6.

The task was: Are you more like your classmates than you think? Your task is to find someone who reflects you in some way.

Students brainstormed questions as to how they would complete this task.

By using things about themselves and being able to show other kids their baby/childhood picture, I was able to engage students in this process.  Also, they really had fun experimenting with the Inspiration program. They knew that other students would be viewing their final product, and this made them put in extra effort for the presentation aspect of the project.

Using the information from this first task to set up groups, I set up a second project.  In groups, students were told to imagine that they were hungry for a banana split. Their task was to create the tastiest, most original and most cost efficient banana split. Students were immediately engaged because it had to do with food! Also, they got to work with other kids to solve the problem.

In our science fiction/ modern fantasy unit,  we have our students read a  science fiction novel and then view a science fiction movie.  After taking notes and completing a graphic organizer/outline, the students write a 5-paragraph compare/contrast paper. It fits into the curriculum because we are supposed to teach our students how to write a 5-paragraph essay including: introductions, transitions, conclusions, editing and revising skills.  Students will be engaged by feeling as thought they are hired by a popular magazine to write this paper and have it published.  They are also given the motivation of using the Inspiration program to organize their thoughts and ideas.  Finally there is a prize for the best papers in each class.  In addition, they will be required to create the setting of a scene from the novel in any way they choose.  It could be through a drawing, a model, a photograph or whatever they come up with.
